Lesson 5 of 6

Let's begin
On her way home from school, Mutesi meets a man she knows from the shops. He offers her a free moto ride and says he will buy her a new phone. "Don't tell your parents," he adds. "It's our little secret."
Mutesi's stomach feels tight. Something is wrong, and her feeling is right. What should she do?
No one has the right to touch your private parts, to ask you to touch theirs, to show you pictures or videos of private parts, or to ask you for photos of your body. This is true even if the person is someone you know, someone older, or someone who gives you gifts.
A safe touch is like a hug from your parent or a handshake from a friend. An unsafe touch is one that hurts you, makes you feel scared or confused, touches your private parts, or comes with a secret. If a touch feels wrong, it is wrong. Abuse is never the child's fault.
In Rwanda, children can also call these free numbers: 116, the child helpline for reporting child abuse, and 3029, the Isange One Stop Centre, which gives free medical care, counselling and legal help to children and adults who have been abused.
Abstinence means choosing not to have sex. For children and young teenagers it is the only fully safe choice: it protects you from early pregnancy and from sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
An early (teenage) pregnancy can be dangerous. A young girl's body is still growing, so pregnancy and birth carry more health risks for her and the baby. Many girls who become pregnant drop out of school, and life can become harder for the young mother and her family. In Rwanda, any sexual act with a child under 18 is a serious crime called child defilement, and the adult is punished, never the child.

Your friend tells you that someone touched her private parts and told her to keep it secret. What should you do?
Answer: Believe her, tell her it is not her fault, and help her tell a trusted adult or call 116.
