Let's begin
Numbers with signs help us solve real problems: the temperature on a mountain, money we owe, a diver going down into Lake Kivu. The trick is to decide what is positive and what is negative, and then use the sign rules.
Worked example 1
(temperature): At midnight the temperature at a camp on Mount Karisimbi was 0 °C. It fell by 2 °C every hour for 4 hours. What was the temperature at 4 a.m.?
Worked example 2
(money): Umutoni's phone plan takes 250 Frw from her balance every day. What is the change in her balance after 7 days?
Worked example 3
(depth): A diver in Lake Kivu goes down 36 m in 4 equal stages. What is the change in depth for each stage?
Worked example 4
(profit and loss): A kiosk made a loss of 1 200 Frw every day for 5 days, then a profit of 4 000 Frw every day for 2 days. What was the result for the week?
Worked example 5
(a rate): A fridge cooled from 4 °C to −8 °C in 3 hours, at a steady rate. By how much did the temperature change each hour?
Multiply and divide before you add and subtract. ( − 3) + 2 × ( − 4) = ( − 3) + ( − 8) = −11.
Tip
Signs first, then numbers. Before you calculate, write a + or − in front of every quantity in the story. Most mistakes come from a missing sign.
Work each one in your exercise book first, then tap Show answer to check.
The temperature on a mountain was 5 °C at 6 p.m. It fell 3 °C every hour for 4 hours. What was it at 10 p.m.?
Answer: 5 + 4 × ( − 3) = 5 + ( − 12) = −7 °C.
A football team had a goal difference of −2 in each of 3 matches. What was its total goal difference?
Answer: 3 × ( − 2) = −6.
A water tank lost 60 litres in 5 hours at a steady rate. What was the change each hour?
Answer: ( − 60) ÷ 5 = −12, so it lost 12 litres each hour.
Work out 20 + ( − 6) × 3.
Answer: 20 + ( − 18) = 2.
