God’s Revelation
Lesson 3 of 3
16 min
Umutoni is a Christian and Keza is a Muslim. They share a desk in P6. For their religious education homework, Umutoni brings her Bible and Keza brings her Qur'an. As they read, they are surprised: both books speak of Abraham, of Moses and of Jesus. "So we have some of the same people in our books," says Keza. "Yes," says Umutoni, "but we also believe some different things about them. Let's find out."
Special revelation is God speaking directly to chosen people at particular times, through prophets, angels, visions and dreams, and holy scriptures. Christians believe God's fullest special revelation is Jesus Christ.

"Read: In the name of thy Lord who createth, Createth man from a clot. Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, Who teacheth by the pen, Teacheth man that which he knew not."
(Qur'an 96:1–5, translated by Marmaduke Pickthall, 1930)
"We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and that which was vouchsafed unto Moses and Jesus and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them."
(Qur'an 3:84, translated by Marmaduke Pickthall, 1930)

| God speaks to people through prophets and holy books. Abraham, Moses and Jesus are honoured in both. Holy books guide people to pray, be honest, be just and help the poor. | Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God and God's fullest revelation. Muslims believe Jesus is a great prophet, and that the Qur'an, revealed to Muhammad, is God's final revelation. |
Tip
Special revelation travels by "messengers". Prophets carry God's message, holy books keep it safe for later generations, and dreams and angels deliver it. For Christians, Jesus is the message in person; for Muslims, the Qur'an is the final message.
