Direction and Location
Lesson 3 of 4
14 min
Habimana finds a small label on the classroom globe: Kigali, 2° S, 30° E. "Why two numbers?" he asks. His teacher answers with a question: "If I tell you only that a village is on the road from Kigali to Huye, can you find it? And if I also tell you it is 20 km from Kigali?" Habimana grins. "Then I can find it exactly!"

Here are some capital cities, rounded to the nearest degree:
| City | Country | Latitude | Longitude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kigali | Rwanda | 2° S | 30° E |
| Gitega | Burundi | 3° S | 30° E |
| Kampala | Uganda | 0° (just north of the Equator) | 33° E |
| Nairobi | Kenya | 1° S | 37° E |
| Dodoma | Tanzania | 6° S | 36° E |
| Juba | South Sudan | 5° N | 32° E |
| Mogadishu | Somalia | 2° N | 45° E |
| Kinshasa | DR Congo | 4° S | 15° E |
Tip
LAT before LONG, like A before O in the alphabet. Always say the latitude first, then the longitude, and never forget the letters N, S, E or W. "2°, 30°" is not an address, but "2° S, 30° E" is.
Answer: Between about 1° S and 3° S.
Answer: North (5° N).
Answer: Nairobi.
Answer: West, because 29° E is a smaller number than 30° E.
Answer: Any two of: Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, the DR Congo.
