Transport and Communication
Lesson 4 of 4
25 min
Let's begin
Habimana's family grows Irish potatoes in Musanze. The harvest is good this year.
But it is the rainy season. The dirt road to the market has turned to deep mud, and the lorry cannot come. Day by day, some potatoes start to rot.
Today you will see why good transport and communication matter so much, what goes wrong, and how we can fix it.
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Road accidents | Obey traffic rules and speed limits; wear helmets; never drive after drinking alcohol |
| Muddy roads | Pave roads, dig drainage ditches and repair roads regularly |
| High costs and border delays | Work with neighbours on the corridors and make border checks faster |
| Weak network | Build more masts and fibre-optic cables |
| Fake news | Check news with trusted sources before you share it |
| Scams | Never share your PIN or password with anyone |
Worked example
Habimana's potatoes.
Step 1 Name the problem: the potatoes cannot reach the market.
Step 2 Find the cause: the dirt road turns to mud when it rains.
Step 3 Fix the cause: pave the road and dig ditches so the water drains away.
Careful! Buying a bigger lorry does not fix the cause. A bigger lorry sinks even deeper in mud.
Tip
Problem, cause, fix
Name the problem. Ask what causes it. Then fix the cause, not just the problem you can see.
