Conflict Resolution
Lesson 3 of 4
20 min
Let's begin
Two neighbours on Niyonzima's hill argue about where their farm boundary lies. Each says the other has moved the marker stones.
Instead of going to a court far away, they take their problem to the Abunzi.
Today you will learn who the Abunzi are, and other Rwandan ways of solving conflicts through dialogue.
Abunzi means "those who reconcile", people who bring others back together. The Abunzi are Rwanda's community mediation committees.
The Abunzi are one of Rwanda's home-grown solutions: an old Rwandan tradition of settling disputes within the community, brought back in a modern form.
The same idea works everywhere: in a family, a village, a nation and between countries. Countries also resolve conflicts through dialogue and peace talks, often with a neutral country or organisation as the mediator.
Worked example
The boundary dispute.
Step 1 Each neighbour explains, and the Abunzi listen to both.
Step 2 The Abunzi visit the farms and ask older neighbours where the boundary has always been.
Step 3 They help the neighbours agree on the line, and new marker stones are placed together.
Step 4 The agreement is written down. The neighbours shake hands and stay friends.
Tip
Abunzi = those who bring people back together
Their first aim is not to punish anyone. It is to reconcile neighbours so they can live side by side in peace.
