Printing: Patterns from Leaves and Bottle Tops
Lesson 3 of 5
11 min
Let's begin
Keza looks at her mama's kitenge cloth.
The same flower is there, again and again, all the way down.
Keza's own paper has stamps scattered everywhere.
Today you will learn what makes one of them a pattern.
Lots of marks on a page is not a pattern.
A pattern is the same order coming back again.
Read this row out loud: leaf, top, leaf, top, leaf, top.
You can guess what comes next. It is a leaf.
Now read this row: leaf, stone, hand, top, leaf, sponge.
You cannot guess what comes next. That row is not a pattern.
Choose only two objects. A leaf and a bottle top.
Stamp them like this: leaf, top, leaf, top, leaf, top.
Keep the same order the whole way along.
Careful! Do not swap to a new object halfway. The pattern breaks.
Lay your ruler flat along the paper first.
Stamp just above it, every single time.
Leave the same small space between one stamp and the next.
When the row is finished, move down and start a second row underneath.
Two neat rows turn a plain page into wrapping paper for a gift.
On cloth: one block of design is printed over and over on a kitenge.
On pots: the potter presses the same little mark round and round the rim.
Go and find a patterned cloth in your house now.
Point at the part that comes back again and again.
The same stamp, pressed over and over in rows.
Tip
Same order, coming back
Read your row out loud: leaf, top, leaf, top.
If you cannot guess what comes next, it is not a pattern yet.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
What comes next? Leaf, top, leaf, top, leaf, ___
Answer: top. The same order keeps coming back.
Is this a pattern? Stone, leaf, leaf, hand, top.
Answer: no. Nothing comes back in order, so you cannot guess the next one.
Mugisha stamps all over his page in no order at all. Has he made a pattern?
Answer: no. He made many marks. Many marks are not a pattern.
What helps you keep a row straight?
Answer: lay a ruler along the paper and stamp just above it each time.
Find a patterned cloth at home and look at it closely.
Answer: your own cloth. Point at the block of design that comes back again and again.
