Plants Germination
Lesson 1 of 5
15 min
Let's begin
On Monday, Mutesi put bean seeds in two cups of soil. She watered one cup every day and forgot the other one. By Friday, the watered cup had tiny white shoots poking out. The forgotten cup looked exactly the same as on Monday.
Why did only one cup of seeds start to grow?
A seed holds a tiny baby plant, a store of food for it, and a tough seed coat that protects it. When the baby plant wakes up and starts to grow, we say the seed germinates. This is called germination.
Put 3 bean seeds on cotton wool in each of four jars:
| Jar | Set-up | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| A | dry cotton wool, warm room | no germination: no water |
| B | damp cotton wool, warm room | germinates: water, air and warmth |
| C | beans covered with water that was boiled (by an adult) and cooled, warm room | no germination: no air (boiling drives the air out of the water) |
| D | damp cotton wool, in a fridge | no germination, or very slow: too cold |
Line a clear jar with damp tissue and push a bean between the tissue and the glass, so you can see it. Keep the tissue damp. Every day for two weeks, measure the bean with a ruler and write down what you see: on which day did the root appear? The shoot? The first leaves?
Tip
A seed needs W-A-W: Water, Air and Warmth, and it must be a living seed.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
What is germination?
Answer: When a seed starts to grow into a new plant.
Mugisha kept beans completely under water for a week. They rotted instead of growing. Why?
Answer: They had no air. Seeds are alive and need oxygen from the air.
Can beans germinate on damp cotton wool with no soil?
Answer: Yes. They use the food stored inside the seed.
Why will roasted groundnuts never grow?
Answer: Roasting kills the baby plant inside the seed.
In the four-jar experiment, which jar germinates, and why?
Answer: Jar B, damp cotton wool in a warm room, because it is the only one with water, air and warmth.
