Let's begin
Mugisha pushes a little car along the path to school. It is made of old wire, with bottle-top wheels and a long wire handle to steer it. His friends crowd round: "Did you buy that?" Mugisha laughs. "No. I made it myself!"
Today you will find out why wire is such a good material for toys, and how to make one safely.
Every material has properties: the things that describe it, such as strong, flexible or waterproof. We choose a material because its properties suit the job.
Wire is made of metal. Metal can be pulled out into long thin threads, and that is how wire is made. Wire has three useful properties for toys:

Tip
Plan, cut, bend, join, test
Say it on your fingers: one finger for each step. And remember the golden safety rule: sharp ends in, eyes away.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Name two properties of wire that make it good for toys.
Answer: Any two of: it is flexible (bends easily), it keeps its shape once bent, and it is strong.
Keza cut her wire and the end is sharp. What should she do?
Answer: Bend the sharp end inwards with pliers, or cover it with tape, so nobody gets scratched.
What is the job of an axle?
Answer: It goes through the middle of two wheels and holds them, so the wheels can turn.
Gatete finds a wire hanging from an electric pole. Can he use it?
Answer: No! It may carry electricity and could kill him. He must leave it and tell an adult.
