Socio-Economic Activities in Our District
Lesson 2 of 4
14 min
On Saturday, Umutoni walks with her grandmother to the market. On the way she sees a farmer digging beans, a moto rider carrying a passenger, and a carpenter making a bed. She passes a health centre, a church and a mosque. At the school field, children are playing football.
"Everyone is busy!" says Umutoni. Her grandmother smiles. "Yes. Some are earning a living, and some are caring for each other. That is how a district lives."
Economic activities are the work people do to earn money or to produce goods and services. For example:
Social activities bring people together and help them live well. They are not done mainly for money:
We put the two words together and say socio-economic activities: all the things people do to earn a living and to live well together.

The land, the weather and the water in a district decide which activities people can do there.
| Where | Main activity | Why there? |
|---|---|---|
| Districts along Lake Kivu, such as Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi | Fishing and boat transport | They are next to a big lake. |
| Musanze | Tourism and growing Irish potatoes | It has most of Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas, and cool, rich soil. |
| Nyagatare | Keeping cattle | It has wide grassy plains and is warmer and drier than most of Rwanda. |
| The hills of the Western and Southern provinces | Growing tea | The hills are cool and get plenty of rain. |
| City of Kigali | Trade, offices, banks, hotels and factories | Many people live there and many roads meet there. |
