Socio-Economic Activities in Our District
Lesson 4 of 4
12 min
Habimana's mother sells avocados and bananas at the market. One evening Habimana asks, "Mama, what do you do with the money?" She counts on her fingers: "Food for the family. Your school uniform. Our health insurance, Mutuelle de Santé. And a little to save." Then she adds, "And the fee I pay for my market stall helps the district, too."
| They give us… | For example |
|---|---|
| Food | Farmers, fishers and livestock keepers feed the whole country. |
| Money (income) | Families use it to buy what they need: food, clothes, school materials and medicine. |
| Jobs | Hotels, factories, shops and moto taxis give people work. |
| Taxes for services | Traders and businesses pay taxes and fees. The district uses them to build roads, schools, markets and health centres. |
| Trade | Districts exchange goods. Rwanda also sells tea and coffee to other countries, which brings money into the country. |
| Visitors | Tourists come to see our parks, lakes and gorillas, and spend money in the district. |
When people work well and live in peace, the district develops: it gets better roads, more schools, clean water and electricity, and families live better lives.

Tip
Follow the franc! The farmer sells beans → the family buys food and pays school fees → the market fee helps the district → the district builds a road → the road helps the farmer carry more beans to market. Every activity helps another one.
