Lesson 5 of 5

Ishimwe wants a real leather football that costs 2,000 Frw. He has only 200 Frw. "I'll never have enough!" he sighs. His grandfather gives him a small wooden box. "Put 200 francs in here every week, when you sell the eggs from your hen. Don't open it until it's full." Ishimwe does it. Ten weeks later, he runs onto the pitch with a brand-new football.
Saving means keeping part of your money to use later, instead of spending it all now.
| Place | Good points | Problems |
|---|---|---|
| A money box at home | Easy for children to use | It can be lost or stolen, and it is easy to open and spend |
| A bank or a SACCO (a savings and credit cooperative) | Safe, and may pay extra money called interest | You need an account, and you may have to travel to it |
| Mobile money savings on a phone | Quick and easy to use | You must keep your PIN secret |
| A village savings group (ikimina) | Neighbours save together and encourage each other | Members must trust each other and follow the rules |
Check Ishimwe's plan: 200 Frw × 10 weeks = 2,000 Frw. Just enough for the football!
The Bible and the Qur'an both teach people to be wise with what they have.
| In the Bible | In the Qur'an |
|---|---|
A sluggard is a lazy person. The tiny ant stores food in good times, ready for hard times. |
Prodigal means wasteful, and grudging means mean. Good people spend in a balanced way: not wasting, and not refusing to share. |
Tip
Pay yourself first! Every time you get money, put a little in your savings before you spend the rest.
