Lesson 2 of 5
14 min
Mutesi sits with her grandmother under an avocado tree. Grandmother points around her. "The beans in our garden, the water from the spring, the wood for our fire, the milk from our cow, even the clay for this pot. Everything we need comes from the land around us. If we look after it, it will look after us."
The environment is everything around us: the soil, water, air, sun, plants, animals and rocks. People get almost all their needs from it.
| Part of the environment | How it meets our needs |
|---|---|
| Soil | We grow food crops in it, like beans, maize, cassava and bananas. Clay is used for pots and bricks. |
| Water (rain, rivers, lakes) | For drinking, cooking, washing, watering crops, and fishing. |
| Trees and forests | Firewood, timber for houses and furniture, fruits, medicine, shade and clean air. |
| Animals | Milk, meat, eggs and skins. Their manure makes the soil rich. |
| Grass | Food for cows and goats. |
| Rocks and sand | Building houses, schools and roads. |
| The sun | Light and warmth, drying crops, and solar power. |

If we cut every tree and dirty every river, the environment cannot meet our needs any more. Here is how we care for it:

Tip
Take one, give one. When you take something from the environment, give something back: cut a tree, plant a tree; use water, save water.
