Digital Pattern Design
Lesson 3 of 4
20 min
Let's begin
Mutesi wants to make wrapping paper for her cousin's birthday present. Her motif is ready. "Now I need about forty copies," she sighs. "Drawing forty diamonds by hand will take all afternoon!"
On a computer it takes a few minutes. The secret is to copy groups of motifs, not one motif at a time.
LibreOffice Draw also has a Duplicate command in the Edit menu. You type how many copies you want and how far apart they should be, and it makes the whole row in one go.
Zoom out (in the View menu, or hold Ctrl and scroll) to see the whole page. Look for gaps between motifs, motifs that overlap by mistake, and rows that are not straight. A good pattern flows evenly with no "holes".
William Morris was an English designer who made patterns for wallpaper and cloth. He designed Daisy, one of his first wallpapers, in 1864. It was printed by hand, one colour at a time, with carved wooden blocks.

Tip
Group, copy, line up, double
Copy one motif to make a row, copy the row to make a block, copy the block to fill the page.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
In which repeat does every second column move down by half a motif?
Answer: The half-drop.
Which command makes a mirror image of a shape?
Answer: Flip (horizontally or vertically).
Gatete has a row of 4 grouped motifs. He copies the row and pastes it underneath, then copies both rows and pastes them underneath. How many motifs does he have now?
Answer: 16. The row of 4 becomes 8, and then 16.
How can you check your pattern for gaps?
Answer: Zoom out to see the whole page and look for holes, overlaps and crooked rows.
Make it: Fill a page with your motif in two different repeats: a straight repeat on the top half and a half-drop or mirror repeat on the bottom half. Save it. (No computer? Use paper tiles.)
