Digital Pattern Design
Lesson 2 of 4
20 min
Let's begin
On a school trip to Kirehe District, Keza sees imigongo panels for the first time: bold black, white and red diamonds and zigzags standing out from the wall. "I want to make a design like that," she says, "but on the computer, so I can print it on a notebook cover."
Every imigongo pattern starts from a small shape that repeats. Today you will design that small shape, the motif, on a computer.
A motif is one small design that is repeated to make a pattern. Motifs can be geometric (lines, triangles, diamonds, zigzags), plant (leaves, flowers), animal (birds, a cow's horns) or abstract (swirls and shapes that are not real things).
Imigongo is an art from eastern Rwanda. Traditionally, women mixed cow dung with ash, shaped it into raised patterns on a wall or board, let it dry hard, and painted it. The motifs are geometric: diamonds inside diamonds, zigzags, triangles and spirals. The traditional colours are black, white and red, sometimes with grey. These bold shapes are perfect for a computer, because a drawing program is very good at straight lines and exact copies.
Try your own ideas too: a zigzag band, a triangle cut in half by colour, or a small spiral. Keep the motif simple, with no more than four colours.
This cloth was made more than 100 years ago by the Kuba people in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda's neighbour. It is woven from raffia palm fibre and embroidered by hand.

Tip
Snap it, turn it, copy it, shrink it, group it
Five verbs for a perfect motif. Keep it simple and bold, like imigongo.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
What is the difference between a motif and a pattern?
Answer: A motif is one small design; a pattern is made when the motif is repeated many times.
How do you turn a square into a diamond in a drawing program?
Answer: Rotate it by 45 degrees.
Why should you group the parts of your motif?
Answer: So that the whole motif moves, copies and resizes as one piece, and the parts do not slip apart.
Name the traditional colours of imigongo.
Answer: Black, white and red (sometimes with grey).
Make it: Design your own geometric motif with at least three shapes, inspired by imigongo. Group it and save it. (No computer? Make it on squared paper and cut out a card template.)

Quick check
Imigongo motifs are mostly plant and animal shapes, such as leaves and birds.
