Introduction to Sewing
Lesson 4 of 4
25 min
Let's begin
Umutoni climbs over the fence to get the ball, and rrrip! The side seam of her trousers opens. Her little brother Byiringiro has a torn shirt pocket too.
"Don't throw them away," says their grandmother. "A few small stitches and they will be as good as new."
All three can be mended with running stitch. Choose thread the same colour as the cloth, so the mend hardly shows.
If you like, use a bright thread and make the rows neat and even. Then the mend becomes a decoration you can be proud of!
Sew rows of running stitch across the hole in one direction, very close together, starting and ending on good cloth. Then turn the cloth and weave your needle over and under those threads in the other direction, like weaving a mat. This is called darning, and it is how people used to mend socks over a wooden egg.
The American painter Mary Cassatt painted this picture of a mother sewing by hand about 125 years ago.

Warning
Safe mending
Take the clothes off before you mend them: never sew cloth that someone is wearing. Work in good light, count your pins and needle when you finish, and keep them away from small children.
Tip
Small stitches, start and finish on strong cloth
Begin 1 cm before the damage and end 1 cm after it, with backstitches at both ends.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
What is the difference between a split seam and a tear?
Answer: In a split seam only the stitches have broken; in a tear the cloth itself is ripped.
Why do we turn clothes inside out to mend a seam?
Answer: So we sew on the back, and the mend does not show on the front.
Where should you start and finish your stitches when you mend a split seam?
Answer: About 1 cm before the gap and 1 cm past it, on the good stitches.
Gatete's patch is exactly the same size as the tear. What will go wrong?
Answer: There is nothing strong to sew into around the tear. The patch should be about 2 cm bigger on every side.
Make it: Ask an adult for an old piece of clothing with a split seam or a small tear, or cut a slit in a scrap of cloth. Mend it with running stitch, and show your mend to the class.
