Introduction to Sewing
Lesson 2 of 4
25 min
Let's begin
Keza turns her school uniform inside out and looks closely. There are lines of tiny stitches everywhere: straight lines along the sides, small slanting stitches inside the hem, and loops around the edge of the pocket.
"Why are they all different?" she asks. Because each stitch has its own job.
A stitch is one loop of thread that goes into the cloth and comes out again. A row of stitches can join two pieces of cloth (a seam), hold an edge in place, stop cloth from fraying, or decorate it. Some stitches are temporary: you take them out later. Most are permanent: they stay.
Running stitch
Backstitch
Finishing: on the back of the cloth, make two tiny backstitches on top of each other, then cut the thread, leaving a short tail.
A sampler is a practice cloth that shows different stitches, like a page of handwriting practice.
No cloth yet? Practise on card. Use a pin to punch holes 5 mm apart along a pencil line, and "sew" with wool and a large, blunt needle.
Stitches can be art. Draw a simple motif, such as an imigongo zigzag or a leaf, on a handkerchief or a cloth bag, and sew along the lines with backstitch in a bright colour. Running stitch in rows makes stripes, and blanket stitch makes a pretty edge.

Stay safe while you sew
Tip
Running goes forward; backstitch goes back to go forward
Running stitch leaves gaps. Backstitch fills every gap, which is why it is so strong.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Which stitch is temporary and is pulled out later?
Answer: Tacking (basting).
How can you tell running stitch from backstitch by looking at the front of the cloth?
Answer: Running stitch has gaps between the stitches; backstitch makes an unbroken line.
The cut edge of Umutoni's cloth is losing threads. Which stitch will stop it?
Answer: Overcasting (blanket stitch also works).
Why should you start sewing from the back of the cloth?
Answer: So that the knot stays hidden on the back.
Make it: Make a stitch sampler with at least four different stitches. Label each one.
