Basic Handball Tactics
Lesson 3 of 3
18 min
Let's begin
It is the day of the P6 inter-class handball tournament. Byiringiro's team has made a plan: Umutoni in goal, Mugisha and Keza on the wings, Byiringiro as centre back. "Remember," he says, "when we win the ball we run, and when we lose it we run back!"
Today you will play handball in a real game situation: with a plan, with positions, and with fair play.
Jog, side-step and skip. Play "ten passes" for 3 minutes. Then every player takes 3 shots at goal from outside the goal area, so the goalkeepers warm up too.
Before the game, agree in your team: who plays in goal, who plays on the wings, who is the centre back and who is the pivot; whether you will defend as a wall or man-to-man; and who takes the 7-metre throws.
The moment your team wins the ball, the wings sprint and the goalkeeper looks for a long throw. The moment you lose it, everybody sprints back to make a wall in front of your goal area.
Make 4 teams. Every team plays every other team in short games. The teams not playing act as referees and timekeepers. After each game, the team talks for one minute: What worked? What will we change?
Walk slowly, stretch your arms, shoulders and legs, drink clean water, and wash your hands and face with soap.

Warning
Stay safe
Tip
Plan it, play it, talk about it
Before the game: make a plan. During the game: run when you win the ball, run back when you lose it. After the game: talk about what worked.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Your team has just lost the ball. What should every court player do?
Answer: Sprint back to make a wall in front of your own goal area.
When may a substitute come on in handball?
Answer: At any time, even while the game goes on, crossing the side line at their team's substitution area.
A defender pulls back an attacker who had a clear chance to score. What does the attacking team get?
Answer: A 7-metre throw.
Name three things your team should agree on before a game.
Answer: Any three of: who plays in goal, who plays on the wings, who is centre back and pivot, how you will defend, who takes the 7-metre throws.
Why should the goalkeeper change at half-time in a class game?
Answer: So that more players get a turn in every position, which is fair and helps everyone learn.
