Basic Handball Tactics
Lesson 2 of 3
19 min
Let's begin
Umutoni, in goal, dives and saves a shot. Before she has even stood up, she sees Mugisha sprinting up the side of the court. One long throw, one catch, one shot: goal! The whole attack took about five seconds.
Goals like that come from teamwork. Today you will learn collective tactics in handball: the positions, attacking in waves, and defending together as a wall.
In threes, jog around the court passing the ball, keeping a triangle shape. After every pass, run to a new space. Then play "ten passes" for 3 minutes: two teams, and a point for 10 passes in a row.
A handball team has a goalkeeper and 6 court players. Positions are named as your own goalkeeper sees the court, so "left" means your goalkeeper's left.
The ball moves faster than any player, so pass and move. Always make sure the player with the ball has a teammate close by to pass to. The give-and-go works in handball too: pass to a teammate, run into space, and get the ball back.
A team may not keep the ball for ever without trying to score. If the referee thinks your team is only passing to waste time, the referee raises one arm as a warning. If your team still does not shoot soon, the ball goes to the other team.
Never stop a fast break by making contact from behind: in handball, that is punished with a red card.
Play 4 court players and a goalkeeper on each team. A goal scored in the first wave, before all the defenders are back, scores 2.
Walk slowly, stretch, drink water, and wash your hands and face.

Warning
Stay safe
Tip
Win it: RUN. Lose it: RUN BACK
Attack in waves, wings first. Defend as a wall, moving together towards the ball.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Which players usually start the first wave of a fast break?
Answer: The wings, sprinting up the sides of the court.
What does the pivot, or line player, do?
Answer: Plays among the defenders near the 6-metre line, blocking their way and looking for gaps to receive the ball.
Where do the defenders stand in a 6-0 defence?
Answer: All 6 court defenders stand in a wall between the 6-metre and 9-metre lines.
The referee raises one arm while your team is attacking slowly. What does it mean?
Answer: It is a passive play warning: your team must try to score soon, or the ball goes to the other team.
An attacker is racing away on a fast break, and a defender is chasing from behind. What must the defender never do?
Answer: Make contact from behind. That is punished with a red card.
