Enlargement and Similarity in 2D
Lesson 4 of 5
25 min
A photocopier's "A4 → A5" setting reduces a page by a scale factor of about 0.71, and its "A5 → A4" setting enlarges by about 1.41. Reduce a page and then enlarge the copy, and you are back to (almost exactly) the original size, because : the second enlargement undoes the first. Enlarge twice with 1.41 instead and every length is multiplied by , which turns A5 into A3. Doing one transformation after another, and undoing one, are the two ideas of this lesson.
Definition
A composite transformation is one transformation followed by another. If is done first and then , the composite is written (read " after "): .
The inverse of a transformation undoes it: if maps to , then maps back to .
Example: if is "enlarge with centre , scale factor 2", then enlarges with scale factor 4, and enlarges with scale factor .
Important
Write for the enlargement with centre and scale factor .
1. The inverse: . Reason: is the same as .
2. Same centre: . Reason: .
3. Different centres: every length is multiplied by and then by . If , the composite is a single enlargement with scale factor , and its centre lies on the line through the two centres. If , it is a translation.
Worked example 1: two enlargements from one centre
is enlarged with and the image is then enlarged with . Find the final image and the single transformation.
Solution . The single transformation is . Check: . ✓
Worked example 2: undoing an enlargement
The enlargement with maps a point to . Write down the inverse and use it to find .
Solution The inverse is . , so and .
Check forwards: , times 3 is , which lands on . ✓
Worked example 3: two different centres
Triangle with vertices , , is mapped by to , and is mapped by with to . Find and describe the single transformation from to .
Solution : , , . Then : for , , so and . Likewise and .
In general: . The scale factor is . The centre is the point that does not move: gives , and gives . So is the enlargement , and its centre is on the -axis, the line through and .
Worked example 4: when the scale factors cancel
Describe .
Solution .
Every point moves 3 units to the right: the composite is the translation by . This fits the rule: , so no length changes, yet the centres differ, so points still move.
Warning
Order matters. means first. With different centres, and have the same scale factor but different centres.
The inverse of is not . Undoing a multiplication by needs a multiplication by .
Tip
For any composite of enlargements, find the scale factor first by multiplying. Then find the centre as the one point that stays where it is: set the composite rule equal to and solve.
Maths Genie: Negative enlargement and combined transformations. Watch the second half, where two transformations are replaced by a single one, as in Worked examples 3 and 4.
Practice
The last two are harder.
