Lesson 4 of 5
25 min
A ball is thrown straight up at . Taking and ignoring air resistance, its height after seconds is metres. Asking "for how long is it higher than 15 m?" means solving , a quadratic inequality. Every such inequality reduces to one question: where is a quadratic expression positive, and where is it negative?

Definition
Quadratic inequality in : an inequality that can be written (or , , ) with . The expression is called a quadratic trinomial.
Example: is the quadratic inequality .
If the trinomial factorises as with . For both brackets are positive; for both are negative, so their product is again positive; between the roots exactly one bracket is negative. If , completing the square gives
and the square bracket is never negative, so the trinomial has the sign of .
Important
Sign rule for
| Discriminant | Sign of |
|---|---|
| , roots | sign of outside the roots, opposite sign between them, 0 at the roots |
| , double root | sign of everywhere except , where it is 0 |
| sign of for every real |
Memory hook: "same sign as outside the roots".
Worked example 1: two roots
Solve .
Solution , so : , . Since , the trinomial is negative between the roots and zero at them. Solution set .
Worked example 2: and
Solve (a) (b) (c) .

Worked example 3: a quotient of quadratics
Solve .
Solution Factorise: . Critical values: (zeros) and (excluded).

Solution set . Note the round brackets at 1 and 3, where the quotient is undefined.
The trinomial is positive for every real exactly when and , and negative for every exactly when and . The condition is itself an inequality in the parameter.
Worked example 4: true for every
Find the values of for which for every real .
Solution Here , so we need :
This trinomial in is negative between its roots: .
Check : ✓. : , which is 0 at , so 7 is rightly excluded.
Worked example 5: a system of two inequalities
Solve the system and .
Solution First: roots 1 and 4, negative between them: . Second: roots , non-negative outside: . The system needs both, so take the intersection: .
Worked example 6: back to the ball
For how long is the ball with at least 15 m above the ground?
Solution , so . The ball is at or above 15 m for seconds.
Warning
Dividing by a negative number reverses the inequality: becomes after dividing by . And never "take the square root of both sides" of to get : the full answer is , that is or .
Tip
Draw a tiny sketch of the parabola: which way it opens (sign of ) and where it cuts the axis (the roots). The answer to "" is where the sketch is above the axis, and to "" where it is below. It takes five seconds and prevents most sign errors.
Khan Academy: Quadratic inequalities (about 10 min). Watch how the zeros of the quadratic split the number line, and how a sketch of the parabola tells which pieces satisfy the inequality.
Practice
Give each answer as an interval or a union of intervals.

Quick check
The trinomial −x² + 2x + 8 has roots −2 and 4. Where is it positive?
