Matrices and Determinants of Order 2
Lesson 4 of 5
25 min
The matrix sends the unit square to the parallelogram built on its columns and . The dashed rectangle around the parallelogram measures . Cut away the two triangles of area , the two of area and the two corner unit squares, and what is left is
Every region of the plane has its area multiplied by the same factor 5, because maps the whole grid of unit squares to a grid of identical parallelograms. The number is the determinant of . It also answers a second question: can the transformation be undone? If the determinant were 0, the plane would be flattened onto a line, and no transformation could rebuild it.
Definition
Determinant of order 2: for ,
(Straight bars mean the determinant, a number; round brackets mean the matrix.) is the factor by which the transformation multiplies areas. A negative determinant means the transformation also reverses orientation, as a reflection does.
Example: ; (a reflection keeps areas but flips the plane); .
| Property | Why |
|---|---|
| ; the identity changes no area. | |
| Doing then multiplies areas by , then by . (Expanding both sides also proves it.) | |
| Each of the two columns is multiplied by : . | |
| (the transpose is defined below). | |
| Swapping the two columns (or rows) changes the sign | . |
| the columns are linearly dependent | This is the test from the unit on vector spaces. |
Worked example 1: using the properties
, . (a) Find without multiplying the matrices. (b) Find . (c) A triangle of area is mapped by . Find the area of its image.
Solution. and .
(a) . (Check: , whose determinant is .) ✓
(b) , not .
(c) Areas are multiplied by : the image has area .
Definition
Transpose: the transpose of a matrix is obtained by writing its rows as columns: . For order 2,
Properties: , , and, with the order reversed, . A matrix with is symmetric.
Example: ; is symmetric.
Definition
Inverse matrix: a square matrix is invertible (non-singular) if there is a matrix with
A matrix with no inverse is singular. If is the matrix of , then is the matrix of the inverse transformation , which undoes .
Example: the rotation has inverse , the quarter-turn the other way: .
Important
Theorem (inverse of a matrix). is invertible if and only if , and then
Proof. Multiply out:
and the product in the other order gives the same. If , divide by it. If and some had , then , which is impossible.
In words: swap the diagonal entries, change the sign of the other two, divide by the determinant.
Worked example 2: computing inverses
Find the inverse, if it exists, of (a) (b) (c) .
Solution.
(a) , so . Check: . ✓
(b) , so .
(c) : is singular and has no inverse. Its columns and are parallel, so squashes the plane onto the line .
Worked example 3: when is a matrix singular? Solving
(a) For which is singular? (b) Solve for , .
Solution. (a) : singular for and .
(b) , . Multiply both sides on the left by : .

Warning
Order matters for inverses. , because to undo "first , then " you undo first. Likewise gives , while gives ; these are usually different. And never "divide" by a matrix: has no meaning.
Tip
For the inverse, say "swap, negate, divide": swap and , negate and , divide by . Then check one entry of : it takes ten seconds and catches most slips.
The Organic Chemistry Tutor: Inverse of a 2x2 matrix (about 10 min). Watch for the swap-and-negate pattern and for the check that the product is the identity.
