Matrices and Determinants of Order 2
Lesson 2 of 5
25 min
A small coffee roaster in Kigali sells roasted beans in and bags through two shops. The numbers of bags sold in two weeks were (illustrative figures):
| Week 1 | 250 g bags | 500 g bags |
|---|---|---|
| Shop 1 | 40 | 25 |
| Shop 2 | 32 | 18 |
| Week 2 | 250 g bags | 500 g bags |
|---|---|---|
| Shop 1 | 36 | 30 |
| Shop 2 | 35 | 20 |
Stripped of their labels, the tables are the matrices
The total for the fortnight is found by adding entries in matching places, and the change from week 1 to week 2 by subtracting them. If every week of the next month repeats week 2, each entry is multiplied by 4. These are the three operations of this lesson.

Definition
Matrix of order : a rectangular array of real numbers with rows and columns. The entry in row , column of is . A matrix is square of order 2; a matrix is a column vector.
Equal matrices: when and have the same order and for every and .
Example: : the orders and differ.
Definition
Sum, scalar multiple and difference: for matrices and of the same order and a real number ,
The zero matrix has every entry 0, and the opposite of is .
Example: , and . The entry says Shop 1 sold 4 fewer small bags in week 2.
Worked example 1: using equality
Find , and if .
Solution. Equal matrices have equal entries in each place: , and . Adding the first two, , so and ; and .
Worked example 2: combining operations
Let and . Find , and solve for the matrix .
Solution.
From : , so
Check: . ✓
Matrix addition and scalar multiplication work entry by entry, exactly like the componentwise operations on , so they obey the same ten rules. Writing for the set of all real matrices, for all and all real :
| Rule | Statement |
|---|---|
| commutative, associative | , |
| zero and opposite | , |
| distributive | , |
| scalars | , |
So is a vector space. Its four "standard" matrices
form a basis, because in exactly one way. Hence .
If and are linear with matrices and , define and . Then , so the matrix of is , and the matrix of is . (The middle step, , is one line of algebra: compare the entries.)
Worked example 3: the sum of two transformations
Let be the reflection in the -axis and the reflection in the line . Find the matrix of and the image of under it.
Solution.
Check directly: and ; their sum is . ✓ Note that is not itself a reflection: adding two transformations adds their output vectors; it does not do one after the other.

Warning
Same order, or no sum at all. is undefined: a and a matrix cannot be added, even though both hold the numbers 1 and 2. And a scalar multiplies every entry: , not just the first row.
Tip
Solve a matrix equation such as exactly like the number equation : move across, then multiply by . Do every step with whole matrices before you calculate any entry.
Mathispower4u: Matrix addition, subtraction and scalar multiplication (about 10 min). Watch for the check on the orders before any matrices are added.
