Weaving: Bracelets and Covered Things
Lesson 1 of 6
10 min
Let's begin
Umutoni wants to make a bracelet today.
She has no money, and the shop is far away.
So she walks around the yard with an old tin.
In go dry grass, banana fibre and two bottle tops.
Today you will hunt for your own weaving things.
Pick up one piece of string. Only one.
That single thin piece is a strand.
Weaving needs many strands. They do not have to match.
Some strands came from a plant.
Banana fibre comes from the stem of a banana plant.
Dry grass grew in the field. A palm leaf grew on a tree.
Strands that grew are called natural.
Now look for things people have finished with.
A page from a full exercise book. An old plastic bag. A bottle top. A button from a torn shirt.
You are using them again. That is called recycling.
Strands like these are recycled.
Hold the strand up and ask yourself:
Did it grow, or did a person make it and then finish with it?
It grew, so it is natural. Somebody finished with it, so it is recycled.
Worked example
a strip cut from an old exercise book.
Step 1 Did it grow on a plant? No. A person made the paper.
Step 2 Has somebody finished with it? Yes, the book is full.
Step 3 So the strip is recycled.
Worked example
dry grass from beside the path.
Step 1 Did it grow? Yes, in the ground.
Step 2 So the grass is natural.
Recycled does not mean rubbish.
A bracelet made from old paper can be lovely.
Your care makes it good, not the price.
Women roll beads out of strips of used paper, then thread them.
Tip
Did it grow, or was it thrown?
It grew on a plant, so it is natural.
A person finished with it, so it is recycled.
Say the word out loud as each strand drops in your tin.
Say natural or recycled, then tap Show answer to check.
