Weaving: Bracelets and Covered Things
Lesson 2 of 6
11 min
Let's begin
Ishimwe holds a long piece of string.
He slides on one bead. It runs off the other end.
He tries again. Off it goes again.
There is nothing wrong with his string.
He has just forgotten one small thing.
A knot is a tie that holds.
Put a knot at one end and your beads cannot escape.
No knot, no bracelet. This is the first thing you do.
Step 1 Take one end of the string.
Step 2 Bend it round to make a small loop.
Step 3 Push the end through the loop.
Step 4 Pull both sides until it goes tight.
Feel the little lump with your finger. That lump is your door.
Step 1 Tie your knot at one end.
Step 2 Thread one bead. Push it down to the knot.
Step 3 Thread the next bead, and the next.
Step 4 Turn the string upside down and shake it.
Nothing falls off. The knot held all three.
Do you still have beads sliding about?
Do not go and look for a thicker string.
Tie a small knot after each bead as well.
Now every bead sits still in its own place.
You do not have to buy beads.
Short pieces of drinking straw work well.
Ask an older person to cut them for you.
Buttons from a torn shirt work too, and so do big dry seeds.
Tip
Knot first, bead after
The knot is the door that keeps your beads inside.
If a bead runs off the end, your door is missing.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
What is the very first thing you do to your string?
Answer: tie a knot at one end. Everything else comes after it.
Keza's beads keep sliding off the end. What is missing?
Answer: her knot. She started threading with an open end.
Name two things you could use instead of shop beads.
Answer: pieces of drinking straw, buttons, big seeds or small bottle tops.
Tie a knot in a shoelace now. Then pull both ends hard.
Answer: it should hold and not come open. If it slips, pull it tighter next time.
Thread four beads, then turn your string upside down.
Answer: all four stay on. The knot at the bottom is holding them.
