Weaving: Bracelets and Covered Things
Lesson 4 of 6
12 min
Let's begin
Keza has a small pile of straw pieces.
Some are red and some are white.
She threads them on fast, any colour, no thinking.
Then she looks at her wrist and frowns.
It is busy, but it says nothing. Today you will make a pattern.
Many beads is not a pattern.
Many colours is not a pattern either.
A pattern is the same order coming back again.
Red, white, red, white, red, white. That is a pattern.
Choose two colours only. Two is easier to keep.
Thread one of each, then start again.
You can also go two and two: red, red, white, white, red, red.
Both are patterns, because both come back again.
Ishimwe threads red, white, red, white, red.
Step 1 Look back at the last two beads: white, then red.
Step 2 Ask what came after red last time. White came after it.
Step 3 So the next bead is white.
Lay the string round your wrist before you tie the last knot.
Leave a little extra, about two fingers wide.
A bracelet with no extra will not go over your hand.
Do not grab whatever bead is nearest.
Look back at the last two beads every time.
What came before them must come again.

Tip
Look back before you thread
Two colours, one small order, over and over.
If you cannot say your order out loud, it is not a pattern yet.
Say your answer first, then tap Show answer to check.
Red, white, red, white, red. What comes next?
Answer: white. Red and white take turns.
Button, straw, button, straw, button. What comes next?
Answer: straw. The same two things keep taking turns.
Red, red, white, white, red, red. What comes next?
Answer: white, white. This pattern goes two and two.
Is red, blue, green, yellow, brown a pattern?
Answer: no. Nothing comes back again, so there is no order to repeat.
Make a bracelet with two colours. Measure it round your wrist first.
Answer: knot, then your repeat all the way along, then the last knot. Leave two fingers of extra room.
