Modelling and Decoration
Lesson 1 of 5
15 min
Let's begin
After the rains, Byiringiro walks along the valley near his home. His sandals sink into sticky grey mud at the edge of the marsh. He squeezes a handful. It keeps the shape of his fingers! "Grandmother," he calls, "is this ibumba?"
It is. Byiringiro has found clay.
Clay (in Kinyarwanda, ibumba) is a very fine, sticky soil. When it is wet, you can shape it, and it keeps its shape. This is called modelling. When it dries, it becomes hard. When it is fired in a very hot fire, it becomes as hard as stone and water cannot soften it again.
In Rwanda, clay is found in valleys, near marshes and along river banks. Potters have used it for hundreds of years to make inkono (cooking pots) and ibibindi (large water pots).
Roll a small piece into a thin snake, as thick as a pencil. Bend it into a ring.
You do not need to buy anything. Collect: a flat board to work on, a bowl of water, a small cloth or sponge, a sharp stick, a blunt stick, bottle tops, an old comb, and a piece of string for cutting clay.

Tip
Soak, sieve, dry, wedge, wrap
Five steps from muddy lumps to clay that is ready to model.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
What is the Kinyarwanda word for clay?
Answer: Ibumba.
Your clay snake breaks into pieces when you bend it. What does that tell you?
Answer: The clay has too much sand in it, so it is not good for modelling.
Why do we wedge clay?
Answer: To push out air bubbles, which can make the work crack or burst in the fire.
How can you keep clay soft until tomorrow?
Answer: Wrap it in banana leaves or a plastic bag.
Make it: With an adult, collect a little clay. Do the snake test, then prepare it using the five steps.
