Practice Songs in C Scale
Lesson 1 of 4
20 min
Let's begin
Before a football match, the players at break time stretch and jog. Your voice is the same! Singers warm up before they sing, so their voices are ready and nobody strains.
Breathe in slowly through your nose, as if you are smelling a sweet mango. Your belly and your sides should grow, not your shoulders. Then breathe out slowly on a long "sssss", like air leaving a bicycle tyre. Try to make the sss last for 10 counts.
All the songs in this unit are in C, so do is C. Your teacher plays or sings C, and everyone sings it back on "do". Now everyone starts on the same note!
Tip
Tall, low, light. Stand tall, breathe low into your belly, and sing high notes light, never shouting.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Where should the air go when you breathe in to sing: your shoulders or your belly?
Answer: Your belly and your sides. Your shoulders stay still.
Name two ways to warm up your voice.
Answer: Any two: humming, a siren on "ooo", singing scale patterns like d r m r d.
In a song in C, which letter note is do?
Answer: C.
What should you do first when you learn a new song?
Answer: Read the words and talk about what they mean.
Why should you not shout the high notes?
Answer: Shouting strains your voice. High notes sound better sung lightly.
