Introduction to Music
Lesson 1 of 5
20 min
Let's begin
On Saturday morning, Ishimwe helps his family at umuganda. His neighbours dig a drain, and one of them starts to sing. Soon everyone sings, and the hoes go up and down together. The work suddenly feels lighter!
Why does singing make work easier? In this lesson you will find out what music is and why people everywhere make it.
All around you there are sounds: a moto on the road, rain on the roof, a goat calling. Most of these sounds are just noise.
Music is sound that people organise on purpose. If your mother drops a cooking pot, that is noise. If you tap the same pot again and again in a steady pattern, you are making a simple kind of music!
Most music has these things:
You will learn about beat, rhythm and melody in the next lessons.
Music has many jobs in our lives:
The very first musical instrument was probably the human voice. After that, people clapped their hands and hit stones or logs together to keep a beat. You carry your voice and hands with you everywhere, so you are always ready to make music.
Tip
Noise just happens. Music is made on purpose. Ask yourself: "Did someone organise these sounds into a pattern or a tune?" If yes, it is music.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
A truck drives past your school and its engine roars. Is this music or noise?
Answer: Noise. Nobody organised the sound into a pattern or a tune.
Mutesi taps a bottle with a pencil: tap, tap, tap-tap, tap. Is this music?
Answer: Yes, a simple kind of music. She made a pattern on purpose.
Name one job music does at a wedding.
Answer: Celebrating (also dancing, bringing people together).
Why do workers sing while they dig together?
Answer: The song helps them keep the same speed, and the work feels lighter.
What was probably the first musical instrument?
