A new girl joins Primary 4. “Hello, my name is Amani,” she says. “I'm from Tanzania. I'm Tanzanian.” Uwase smiles. “Welcome, Amani! I'm from Rwanda. I'm Rwandan.”
Today you will learn the names of countries, their capital cities and the words for the people who live there.
Rwanda is a small country in East Africa. It has no sea, but it has many hills, lakes and rivers. Its capital city is Kigali.
Four countries share a border with Rwanda. Uganda is to the north. Tanzania is to the east. Burundi is to the south. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (the DRC) is to the west, on the other side of Lake Kivu.
Rwanda and its neighbours are members of the East African Community, together with other countries such as Kenya and South Sudan. The members trade with each other, and their people can travel from one country to another more easily. Many people in East Africa speak Kiswahili, so it helps them to talk to each other.
People from Rwanda are Rwandans. People from Uganda are Ugandans. People from the DRC are Congolese. Every country has its own flag, its own capital city and its own name for its people.
Which country is to the south of Rwanda?
Burundi.
Which lake is between Rwanda and the DRC?
Lake Kivu.
Why is it useful that many East Africans speak Kiswahili?
It helps people from different countries to talk to each other.

Uwase: What is the capital of Tanzania?
Amani: It's Dodoma. But I lived in Mwanza, near Lake Victoria.
