My Friends and I
Lesson 1 of 5
40 min
It is Saturday afternoon in Nyamata. Gatete is drawing cows in his notebook. His friend Keza is playing the drum with her cousins. Mugisha is at the football pitch, of course!
Each of them has a hobby. Today you will read about hobbies and learn to talk about the things you and your friends like doing.
This short text is adapted from the Simple English Wikipedia article Hobby. Read it and find the names of five hobbies.
A hobby is something that people do in their free time, for fun. People do it because they like it.
Some people like making things with their hands. They sew clothes, weave baskets or make pots from clay. Some people like drawing and painting pictures. Others enjoy singing, playing musical instruments and writing songs.
Some people enjoy playing games, like chess, cards or board games. Others like solving puzzles.
Many people enjoy reading books and newspapers, or writing stories or a diary.
Some people have hobbies at home. They enjoy cooking for their family and friends, or keeping a pet, like a dog, a cat or rabbits.
Other people prefer hobbies outdoors, like gardening, walking, cycling, fishing and sports.
