Our School
Lesson 1 of 5
40 min
It is Monday morning at a primary school in Rwamagana. Keza runs into the classroom and looks at the timetable on the wall. “Mathematics first!” she smiles. Mathematics is her favourite subject.
A timetable tells you which subject you have, on which day and at what time. Today you will read about a teacher who has a plan for every day of the week. Then you will learn to talk about your own subjects and timetable.
Read this story from the African Storybook. Read it once for the meaning. Then read it again and find all the days of the week.
This is my teacher. Her name is Teacher Akinyi. She loves us a lot.
Teacher Akinyi teaches us the alphabet. She teaches us the vowels. I can say the letters a, e, i, o, u.
Teacher Akinyi teaches us colours. I know red, blue, green, yellow, and black.
Teacher Akinyi knows many stories. She tells us a different story each day of the week.
On Monday, she tells us stories about great men.
On Tuesday, she tells us stories about great women.
On Wednesday, she tells us stories about means of transport.
On Thursday, she tells us stories about farming.
And on Friday, we tell our own stories to the class.
Our teacher is the best teacher in the world! When I grow up, I want to be like Teacher Akinyi.
What does Teacher Akinyi teach the class?
The alphabet, the vowels and colours. She also tells them stories.
On which day do the children tell their own stories?
On Friday.
What are the stories about on Wednesday?
Means of transport, such as buses, bicycles, boats and aeroplanes.
The child says, “When I grow up, I want to be like Teacher Akinyi.” Why do you think the child says this?
Possible answer: because she is kind, she loves the children and she teaches them many interesting things.
There are seven days in a week. We go to school from Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday are the weekend.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Days of the week always start with a capital letter: Monday, not monday. Be careful with Wednesday. We say “WENZ-day”, but we write a d that we do not hear: Wed-nes-day.
In Primary 4 you learn many subjects. Here are some of them: Mathematics, English, Kinyarwanda, French, Science and Elementary Technology (SET), Social and Religious Studies (SRS), Creative Arts and Physical Education (PE). The names of languages also start with a capital letter: English, French, Kinyarwanda.
Here is part of a timetable for a Primary 4 class. It is an example.
| Time | Monday | Tuesday |
|---|---|---|
| 7:30 | Mathematics | English |
| 8:10 | English | Mathematics |
| 8:50 | Kinyarwanda | SET |
| 9:30 | Break | Break |
| 9:50 | SET | French |
| 10:30 | SRS | Kinyarwanda |
| 11:10 | Creative Arts | PE |
Mugisha: What do we have on Tuesday?
Keza: We have English first. Then we have Mathematics.
Mugisha: What time does French start?
Keza: It starts at 9:50, after break.
Mugisha: Which subject do you like best?
Keza: I like Mathematics best, because I love numbers.
Look at the small words: we say on + a day (on Tuesday) and at + a time (at 9:50).
Write: Copy the seven days of the week in your exercise book. Then write your own class timetable for one school day.
Speak: Tell a friend about your day. Use first, then and after break: “On Monday we have Mathematics first. Then we have English. After break we have SET.” Then ask your friend: “Which subject do you like best? Why?”
Tip
Days go ON, times go AT. We have English on Monday at 8:10.
And Wednesday hides a silent d: say WENZ-day, write Wed-nes-day.
Write your answers in your exercise book, then check.
