Body Control and Balance
Lesson 1 of 3
20 min
Let's begin
On market day, Mutesi watches a woman walk down the hill with a big basket of bananas on her head. She does not hold it with her hands, and it does not fall!
How does she stay so steady? In this lesson you will learn what balance is and how to make your own balance better.
Balance means keeping your body steady so you do not fall over. You use it all day: standing on one foot to put on a shoe, walking on a narrow path between gardens, riding a bicycle, or carrying something on your head.
There are two kinds of balance:
The ground under and between the body parts that touch the floor is called your base of support.
That is why a goalkeeper waits with feet apart and knees bent. It is hard to knock them over, and they are ready to move either way.
Stay safe: clear a space with no stones or desks nearby, and let a friend stand beside you for the hard challenges.
Tip
Go wide, go low, find a spot. Feet apart, knees bent, and eyes on one spot that does not move. Your body will stay steady.
Think about each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Which is steadier: standing on tiptoe with your feet together, or standing with your feet apart and knees bent?
Answer: Feet apart with knees bent. The base is wider and your body is lower.
Name two of your balance helpers.
Answer: Any two of these: eyes, tummy muscles, arms, feet, the tiny part inside your ears.
Why is the stork stand harder with your eyes closed?
Answer: Your eyes help your brain know where your body is. Without them you wobble more.
Is walking along a line a still balance or a moving balance?
Answer: A moving balance, because you stay steady while you move.
Do it: time your stork stand on your left foot, then on your right foot. Which is longer?
Answer: Your own result. Most people find one foot easier, so practise more on the other one.
