Introduction to Handball
Lesson 1 of 4
15 min
Let's begin
Mugisha catches the ball and gets ready to kick it to Keza, the way he does in football. "Stop!" laughs Keza. "In this game we never kick. We throw!"
Welcome to handball. Your hands do almost all the work, and the most important things they do are passing and catching. Today you will learn how.
Handball (in Kinyarwanda, umupira w'amaboko) is a fast team game. Each team has 7 players on the court: 6 court players and 1 goalkeeper. You move the ball by passing it with your hands, and you score a goal by throwing it into the other team's goal. Court players may not kick the ball or touch it with their feet.
Jog around the court, then side-step and skip. Handball uses your shoulders a lot, so do big arm circles forwards and backwards, roll your wrists and stretch your fingers. Then pass the ball gently from hand to hand around your waist.
This is the main pass in handball. You throw with one hand, a bit like throwing a stone a long way.
If a defender's arms are in the way, push the ball down with one hand so it bounces once and comes up to your teammate's waist. Make it bounce closer to your teammate than to you. For this pass you need a ball that bounces, on hard ground.
Walk slowly around the court. Stretch each arm across your chest and above your head, and gently shake out your hands. Then drink some water.

Warning
Stay safe
Tip
Side-on, elbow up, step and whip!
To catch, remember window, watch, give: make a window with your hands, watch the ball in, and give with your elbows.

How many players from each team are on a handball court, and who are they?
Answer: 7: six court players and one goalkeeper.
Ishimwe throws with his right hand. Which foot does he step with when he passes?
Answer: His left foot, the opposite foot.
Where should your elbow be when you get ready for a shoulder pass?
Answer: Up, at shoulder height or higher.
Why do you bend your elbows when you catch?
Answer: To "give" with the ball and bring it in to your chest, so it does not bounce out of your hands.
A defender stands between you and your teammate with arms up high. Which pass could you use?
Answer: A bounce pass, under the defender's arms.
