Objects Production
Lesson 5 of 5

Let's begin
Ishimwe left his exercise book on the grass during break. Then it rained. When he came back, the pages were wet and the ink had run. "Now I must copy all my notes again," he sighed.
Everything we own lasts longer when we look after it. This is called maintenance.
Maintenance means keeping an object clean, safe and working well, and repairing it before a small problem becomes a big one.
| Object | How to look after it |
|---|---|
| Books and exercise books | Cover them, keep them dry, turn pages gently, do not write on the covers. |
| Pens, rulers, school bags | Keep them in a pencil case or bag; sew a torn bag before the hole grows. |
| Laptops and tablets | Keep them away from water, dust and food; carry them with two hands; shut them down properly. |
| Metal tools (hoe, pliers) | Clean off soil, dry them and store them indoors. Water and air make iron form rust, a brown flaky layer that weakens it. A little oil helps stop rust. |
| Wood, sticks and banana fibre | Keep them dry so they do not rot or go mouldy; tighten loose joints. |
| Clay objects | Handle them gently and put them where they cannot fall. |
| Wire toys | Re-tie loose joints and bend back any sharp end that sticks out. |
