Let's begin
Mugisha's cousin in Musanze sends him a photo of a gorilla. A second later it is on Mugisha's phone in Kigali. How did the photo travel so far, so fast?
It travelled on the internet. Let's learn the words people use when they talk about it.
When two or more computers are joined so they can share information, they make a network. The internet is the biggest network in the world: it joins millions of smaller networks from homes, schools, businesses and governments. Being connected to it is called being online.
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Internet service provider | A company that connects you to the internet, usually for a fee (for example, a mobile phone company). |
| Wi-Fi | A way to connect to a network without wires, using radio waves. |
| Website and web page | A web page is one page of information on the internet. A website is a group of web pages, like a book is a group of pages. |
| Web browser | A program for visiting websites, such as Firefox or Chrome. |
| Web address (URL) | The address you type to reach a website, for example www.gov.rw. |
| Search engine | A website that helps you find information when you type a few words. |
| A message sent from one person to another over the internet. | |
| Download | Copying a file from the internet onto your device. |
| Upload | Sending a file from your device up to the internet. |
