Human Sensory Organs
Lesson 4 of 5
15 min
Let's begin
Byiringiro is at the far end of the football field when his friend shouts his name. He hears it straight away and turns around. How did the sound get from his friend's mouth into Byiringiro's brain?
The inner ear also has three curved tubes that help you keep your balance. When you spin round and round, you feel dizzy because of them.
ear flap → ear canal → eardrum → three tiny bones → cochlea → hearing nerve → brain

Tip
Put nothing smaller than your elbow in your ear! (And your elbow does not fit.)
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
What does the ear flap do?
Answer: It collects sounds and sends them into the ear canal.
Which part of the ear vibrates when sound reaches it?
Answer: The eardrum.
Why do you feel dizzy after spinning around?
Answer: The parts of the inner ear that control balance have been disturbed.
Why should you not clean deep inside your ear with a stick?
Answer: It can hurt the eardrum. The ear cleans itself.
Put in order: cochlea, ear flap, eardrum, brain.
Answer: Ear flap → eardrum → cochlea → brain.
