Muscles
Lesson 3 of 5
15 min
Let's begin
Uwase lifts a small jerrycan of water from the ground to the table. Her arm bends, lifts, then straightens again. But muscles can only pull, never push. So how does her arm straighten again?
A muscle pulls on a bone when it contracts, but it cannot push the bone back. So muscles work in pairs: when one contracts, its partner relaxes.
Your thighs work the same way: the back thigh muscles bend the knee, and the front thigh muscles straighten it.
A muscle only contracts when a message from your brain arrives along a nerve. That is how you control your voluntary muscles.
Feel it: hold your left hand on your right upper arm. Bend and straighten your right arm. Feel the biceps bulge at the front, then the triceps harden at the back.

Tip
Muscles PULL, they never PUSH, so they work in PAIRS
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Which muscle contracts when you bend your arm?
Answer: The biceps.
Which muscle contracts when you straighten your arm?
Answer: The triceps.
Why do muscles have to work in pairs?
Answer: A muscle can only pull, not push, so another muscle is needed to pull the bone back.
Why do you shiver when you are cold?
Answer: Your muscles shake quickly to make heat and warm you up.
Name two jobs of voluntary muscles apart from moving.
Answer: Any two of: keeping posture and balance, making faces, speaking and chewing, protecting the organs in the belly, making heat, helping you breathe.
