Salutations
Lesson 1 of 4
15 min
Keza is in P2. She gets up at 6 h. She goes to bed at 21 h.
She meets many people today. Does she greet them all the same way? Let’s find out!
You know these four parts of the day. Look at the sky in each picture.
Now read Keza’s day. Say each greeting out loud.
| When? | Who? | Keza says… |
|---|---|---|
| 🌅 6 h 30, at home | Maman | « Bonjour, maman ! » |
| 🏫 7 h 30, at school | the teacher | « Bonjour, Madame Umutoni ! » |
| ☀️ 14 h, at home | Grand-père | « Bonjour, grand-père ! » |
| 🌇 19 h, at the door | the neighbour | « Bonsoir, Madame Uwera ! » |
| 🌙 21 h, in bed | Papa | « Bonne nuit, papa ! » |

In French, you say Bonjour in the morning. You still say Bonjour in the afternoon.
When the sun goes down, change to Bonsoir (good evening).
Bonne nuit is not a hello. It means sleep well. Say it only at bedtime.
| Time | French | Kinyarwanda |
|---|---|---|
| 🌅 morning | Bonjour ! | Mwaramutse ! |
| ☀️ afternoon | Bonjour ! | Mwiriwe ! |
| 🌇 evening | Bonsoir ! | Mwiriwe ! |
| 🌙 bedtime | Bonne nuit ! | Ijoro ryiza ! |
Look! Kinyarwanda changes at midday. French waits for the evening.
Play with a big person. They say a time: « 7 h ! », « 19 h ! », « 21 h ! ».
You point to the right picture. Then say the greeting in French.
Tip
Wait for the sunset. Mwaramutse changes to Mwiriwe at midday. But French Bonjour stays all day. Change to Bonsoir only when the sun goes down.
