Salutations
Lesson 4 of 4
15 min
Someone knocks on the door. A visitor comes in. She says « Bonjour à tous ! ».
The whole class stands up. What do you all say back?
Bonjour à tous ! means Hello, everyone! The class answers together.
Madame Uwera : « Bonjour à tous ! »
Les élèves : « Bonjour, madame ! »
Madame Uwera : « Comment allez-vous ? »
Les élèves : « Très bien, merci, madame. Et vous ? »
Madame Uwera : « Je vais très bien, merci. Asseyez-vous ! »
Asseyez-vous ! means sit down!
Tell the truth! If you feel ill, say: Pas très bien. Je suis malade. (Not very well. I am ill.)
A grown-up asks how you are. Answer in four little steps:
All together: « Très bien, merci, madame. Et vous ? »
In Kinyarwanda you also say thank you: Murakoze !
Byiringiro has a fever. The neighbour comes to visit.
Monsieur Gatete : « Bonsoir, Byiringiro. Ça va ? »
Byiringiro : « Pas très bien, monsieur. Je suis malade. »
Monsieur Gatete : « Oh ! Repose-toi bien. Bonne nuit ! »
Byiringiro : « Merci, monsieur. Bonne soirée ! »
Repose-toi bien means rest well.
The words are the same. Only your voice changes! Up at the end: you ask. Down at the end: you answer.
Be the visitor! Knock on a door at home. Say « Bonjour à tous ! Comment allez-vous ? ».
Your family answers with the polite recipe. Then swap.
