Lesson 1 of 4
15 min
Today the school has its own little radio show. Keza is the reporter!
She has a microphone and lots of questions. Who will she talk to?
Keza : « Bonjour ! Ici la radio de l’école. Je m’appelle Keza. Tu t’appelles comment ? »
Kalisa : « Je m’appelle Kalisa. »
Keza : « Tu habites où, Kalisa ? »
Kalisa : « J’habite à Kayonza. »
Keza : « Merci ! Et vous, madame, vous vous appelez comment ? »
Madame Uwera : « Je m’appelle Madame Uwera. »
Keza : « Vous habitez où, madame ? »
Madame Uwera : « J’habite à Kigali, à Remera. »
Keza : « Merci, madame ! Bonne journée ! »
Ici la radio de l’école means this is the school radio.
Did you see? Keza says tu to Kalisa, a boy her age. She says vous to Madame Uwera, a grown-up. Just like in Unit 1!
| I (je) | you, a friend (tu) | you, a grown-up (vous) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| s’appeler (name) | je m’appelle | tu t’appelles | vous vous appelez |
| habiter (to live) | j’habite | tu habites | vous habitez |
Yes, vous vous appelez has vous two times! That is normal in French.
In Kinyarwanda: Witwa nde ? (what is your name?) and Utuye he ? (where do you live?).
The h in habiter makes no sound. So je gets short: j’habite. But tu never gets short: tu habites.
With vous, the s joins the next word with a z sound. Vous habitez sounds like vou-za-bi-té.
Be a radio reporter! Hold a spoon like a microphone.
Ask a child: « Tu t’appelles comment ? Tu habites où ? ». Then ask a grown-up: « Vous vous appelez comment ? Vous habitez où ? ».
Tip
Count the people. A friend your size gets tu: tu habites. A grown-up gets vous: vous habitez. The z sound tells you it is vous!
Say or write your answer first, then tap Show answer to check.
