Madame Umutoni writes the class list on the board. She asks each child: « Ça s’écrit comment ? ».

Madame Umutoni : « Byiringiro, ça s’écrit comment ? »
Byiringiro : « B – Y – I – R – I – N – G – I – R – O. »
Madame Umutoni : « Y ? Le i grec ? »
Byiringiro : « Oui, madame, le i grec ! »
Ça s’écrit comment ? means How do you spell it? In Kinyarwanda: Byandikwa gute ?

A class list goes in ABC order. Look at the first letter of each name.
B comes before G. G comes before I. And so on, all the way to Z.
Ishimwe fills in her fiche (a little form about her).
Then she writes it in sentences:
Bonjour ! Je m’appelle Ishimwe. J’ai huit ans. Je suis rwandaise. J’habite à Nyagatare. Je suis en P2.
Spell your name to a big person, letter by letter. Then copy the fiche into your book and fill it in.
Read your sentences out loud, like a news reader on the radio!
