Children from two countries play football in Rubavu. Keza meets a girl in a yellow shirt.
Is she from Rwanda? Keza asks her in French.
Keza : « Salut ! Tu es rwandaise ? »
Amani : « Non, je suis congolaise. J’habite à Goma. Et toi ? »
Keza : « Moi, je suis rwandaise. J’habite à Rubavu. Tu es en P2 ? »
Amani : « Oui ! Je suis élève en deuxième année. »
Gatete : « Et moi, je suis rwandais ! On joue ? »
Je suis élève means I am a pupil. En deuxième année means in second year, like P2. On joue ? means shall we play?
être means to be.
| I (je) | you (tu) |

| je suis | tu es |
To make a yes-or-no question, just let your voice go up: Tu es rwandaise ? ↗
Answer Oui, je suis … or Non, je suis …
Look at the words that end in -ais. A girl adds an e: rwandais becomes rwandaise.
Tanzania is different. A boy says tanzanien, a girl says tanzanienne.
rwandais: the s sleeps. You do not hear it.
rwandaise: the e wakes the s up. It buzzes like a z: rwan-dèz.
Point to each country on the picture. Ask a friend: « Tu es burundais ? ».
Your friend answers: « Non, je suis rwandais ! ». Then swap.
Tip
The e wakes up the sleeping s. congolais (the s sleeps), congolaise (the s buzzes: zzz).
