Ma famille
Lesson 2 of 4
20 min
Umutoni visits her friend Gatete. She sees his big family tree.
She asks: « Kalisa, c'est qui ? »
How can Gatete explain? Today you will say how people in a family are linked.
Umutoni : « Gatete, Kalisa, c'est qui ? »
Gatete : « C'est mon oncle. C'est le frère de mon papa. »
Umutoni : « Et Mukamana ? »
Gatete : « C'est ma tante. C'est la sœur de mon papa. »
Umutoni : « Et Byiringiro ? »
Gatete : « C'est mon cousin. C'est le fils de ma tante. »
Umutoni : « Et Keza, c'est ta sœur ? »
Gatete : « Non ! C'est ma cousine. C'est la fille de ma tante. »
le fils = the son. Say it like « fiss »: the l is silent!
la fille = the daughter. It also means a girl.
In English we say papa's brother. In French we say le frère de papa: the brother OF papa.
ou = or.
In Kinyarwanda, the brother of your maman is marume. The sister of your papa is masenge.
French is easier. Every uncle is un oncle, and every aunt is une tante.
Tip
Read it backwards
« le frère de papa »: start at the end. Papa's brother!
