Algebraic Fractions
Lesson 4 of 5
22 min
To add fractions you need a common denominator; to multiply them you do not. , and it is quicker to cancel first: 2 goes into 10 five times and 3 goes into 9 three times, leaving . With algebraic fractions, cancelling first is not just quicker, it is the whole method: factorise everything, cancel, then multiply what is left.
Definition
Reciprocal of an algebraic fraction (with and ): the fraction , obtained by turning it upside down. A fraction times its reciprocal is 1.
Notation: the reciprocal of is also written .
Example: the reciprocal of is , which needs as well as .
Important
Rules. With every denominator non-zero, and when dividing,
Why the division rule: dividing by a number means finding what to multiply it by to get the first number. Multiplying by gives , as required. Because the divisor must not be zero, its numerator also gives excluded values.
Worked example 1: monomials
Simplify .
Solution Conditions: , . Cancel number factors and powers across the two fractions:
Worked example 2: factorise, cancel, multiply
Simplify .
Solution Denominators: and , so .
Worked example 3: division
Simplify .
Solution Factorise: , , .
Conditions: and (denominators), and (the divisor's numerator cannot be 0).
Worked example 4: the area of a rectangle
A rectangle has length metres and width metres, where . Find its area in simplest form, and its value when .
Solution
When : the length is m, the width is m, and the area is . Check: . ✓
Worked example 5: a fraction of fractions
Simplify .
Solution Write the top and the bottom as single fractions, then divide:
Conditions: (from ), and the bottom , so . Answer: , .
Warning
Turn over the second fraction only. becomes , not . And cancel only factors: in , the s cannot be cancelled, because is a sum.
Tip
Keep, change, flip. Keep the first fraction, change into , flip the second fraction. Then treat it as a multiplication.
Khan Academy: Multiplying and dividing rational expressions 1 (4 min). Watch how the expressions are factorised first, how the division becomes a multiplication by the reciprocal, and how the excluded values are recorded.
Practice
Simplify, and state the conditions. The last three are harder.
