Algebraic Fractions
Lesson 2 of 5
22 min
You simplify by writing and cancelling the common factor 6, which leaves . Algebraic fractions are simplified in exactly the same way, and the key word is factor. Everything you cancel must multiply the whole numerator and the whole denominator, so the first job is always to factorise both of them completely.
Definition
Simplest form (lowest terms) of an algebraic fraction: the form in which the numerator and denominator have no common factor except 1 (or ).
Notation: the simplified fraction is written with the conditions of the original, for example .
Example: is in simplest form; is not, because 2 is a common factor.
Important
Rule (cancelling a common factor). For polynomials , , ,
Why: , and only when . So the two sides are equal for every value except those that make zero. That is why a simplified fraction keeps all the excluded values of the original.
Worked example 1: monomials
Simplify .
Solution Conditions: , . The highest common factor of the two terms is :
Worked example 2: factorise, then cancel
Simplify .
Solution The denominator is , so the conditions are and . The numerator is a difference of two squares.
Check with : the original gives , and the answer gives . ✓ Note that on its own would allow , but the original fraction does not exist there, so the condition must be kept.
Worked example 3: factors that differ only in sign
Simplify .
Solution Conditions: . Write , so the numerator and denominator share the factor :
Worked example 4: a trinomial with , and grouping
Simplify (a) (b) .
Solution
(a) , so . For the numerator, and : . So
(b) Group the numerator: . The denominator is , so .
Warning
Cancel factors, never terms. In the s are terms (added), not factors, so . Test with : . This fraction is already in simplest form. In the same way, does not simplify, because has no real factors.
Tip
Check with a number. Choose a value that is not excluded (such as 1 or 2) and put it into the original fraction and into your answer. If the two values differ, a factor was cancelled wrongly.
Khan Academy: Simplifying rational expressions introduction (7 min). Watch how both the numerator and the denominator are factorised before anything is cancelled, and how the excluded values of the original expression are kept.
Practice
Simplify, and state the conditions. The last three are harder.
