Type or into a calculator and it answers "Error". A formula such as or works only for some inputs. Before you can graph, solve or apply a function, you need to know which inputs are allowed (the domain) and which outputs can come out (the range).

Definition
Function from a set to a set : a rule that assigns to each element of exactly one element of .
Domain of a real function given by a formula: the largest set of real numbers for which is a real number, written .
Range (or image): the set of all values for in the domain, .
Example: has domain and range : every output is a square, and every equals .
Important
Finding the domain
| Type of function | Condition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Polynomial | none: domain | : |
| Rational | : | |
| Even root , even | : | |
| Odd root , odd | defined | : |
| Even root in a denominator | : |
When a formula has several parts, every condition must hold at once: the domain is the intersection of the sets.
Worked example 1: irrational functions
Find the domain of (a) (b) (c) .
Solution
Warning
Do not rewrite as before finding the domain. The second form needs , so it loses the whole interval , where both and are negative but their quotient is positive.
Three methods: read it from the graph; for a quadratic, complete the square; in general, solve for and ask for which values of a solution exists in the domain.
Worked example 2: ranges of quadratics
Find the range of (a) (b) .
Solution
Worked example 3: range of a rational function
Find the domain and range of .
Solution Domain: . For the range, solve for :
For this gives an , and that is never 1 (since would need ). For the equation has no solution. Range: .
Worked example 4: range of an irrational function
Find the domain and range of (a) (b) .
Solution
Tip
For a domain, list every "danger": a denominator (must not be 0), an even root (radicand ), an even root in a denominator (radicand ). Write one condition for each, solve each, and intersect. For a range, a quick sketch often shows the answer before the algebra confirms it.
The Organic Chemistry Tutor: How to find the domain of a function (about 19 min). Watch how the conditions from fractions and square roots are written separately, solved, and then combined into interval notation.
Practice
Give every answer in interval notation.
