Polynomial, Rational and Irrational Functions
Lesson 3 of 5
25 min
A shop adds a tax of 18% to a price and also gives a discount of 2 000 Frw (illustrative figures). Write for "add the tax" and for "take the discount". Tax first, then discount: . Discount first, then tax: . On a 50 000 Frw phone the two orders give 57 000 Frw and 56 640 Frw. Doing one function after another is called composition, and, as here, the order usually matters. This lesson also shows how to undo a function with its inverse.
Functions are combined value by value: , , and . The new function exists only where both are defined, and a quotient also needs :
Worked example 1
Let and . Give and with their domains.
Solution , .
Definition
Composite function (" after ", or " of "): . Its domain is the set of in with .
Example: for and , , while .
Worked example 2: two orders, and their domains
(a) For and , find and .
(b) For and , find and with their domains.
Solution
Tip
Learn to split a function into a composite: is with inner function and outer function . Unit 8 (the chain rule) uses exactly this skill.
To undo , every output must come from only one input; otherwise, given , you could not tell which it came from. on fails: .
Definition
One-to-one (injective) function: . Graphically, every horizontal line meets the graph at most once.
Inverse function: if is one-to-one from its domain onto its range , then is the function from to with
range of , and range of . The graph of is the mirror image of the graph of in the line .
Example: converts Celsius to Fahrenheit; its inverse is .

Important
To find : write ; solve for in terms of ; swap the letters to write ; state its domain (the range of ); check that .
Worked example 3: inverse of a rational function
Find the inverse of , .
Solution From Lesson 2, (), and each comes from exactly one , so is one-to-one onto . Hence
Check: ✓.
Worked example 4: restrict the domain first
is not one-to-one on . Restrict it to and find the inverse.
Solution On , is increasing, so one-to-one, with range . (the positive root, because ). So , .
Warning
is the inverse function, not . For , , but . They are different functions.
The Organic Chemistry Tutor: Composite functions and inverse functions (about 11 min). Watch how f(g(x)) is built by substitution, and how swapping x and y and solving gives the inverse.
Practice
State the domain of every function you find.

Quick check
For f(x) = 2x + 3 and g(x) = x², what is (g ∘ f)(1)?
