Reading, Writing and Comparing Whole Numbers Beyond 1,000,000
Lesson 4 of 6
30 min
Let's begin
A coffee cooperative in Huye earned 2 745 386 Frw in its first season and 1 968 457 Frw in its second. The treasurer, Habimana, has no calculator. How much did the cooperative earn in the two seasons together?
Write the numbers one under the other with ones under ones, tens under tens, and so on. Then add each column, starting from the ones. When a column adds up to 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry the 1 to the next column on the left. (On an abacus, this is swapping ten beads on one rod for one bead on the next rod.)
Worked example
2 745 386 + 1 968 457
So the cooperative earned 4 713 843 Frw.
Check it: 2 745 386 is about 3 million and 1 968 457 is about 2 million, so the answer should be about 5 million. 4 713 843 is close.
Again line up the places and start from the ones. If the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, borrow 1 from the next place on the left. That 1 is worth 10 in the place you are working on.
Worked example
A school had 5 000 000 Frw to build a kitchen. It spent 1 468 275 Frw. How much is left?
Check it: add the answer to the number you took away. 3 531 725 + 1 468 275 = 5 000 000. ✔
Worked example
A sector had 9 250 000 Frw. It spent 3 785 500 Frw on water tanks and 2 960 750 Frw on school desks. How much money is left?
Tip
Right to left, and always check. Start with the ones every time. After subtracting, add your answer to the smaller number; you must get back the bigger number.
Work each one in your exercise book first, then tap Show answer to check.
4 608 275 + 3 594 836
Answer: 8 203 111
8 000 000 − 2 756 318
Answer: 5 243 682. Check: 5 243 682 + 2 756 318 = 8 000 000.
A bus company carried 1 385 460 passengers in January and 1 297 685 in February. How many more passengers did it carry in January?
Answer: 87 775 more passengers.
A farmer earned 2 450 000 Frw from maize and 1 875 500 Frw from beans. She paid 1 360 000 Frw for workers. How much did she keep?
Answer: 2 450 000 + 1 875 500 = 4 325 500; then 4 325 500 − 1 360 000 = 2 965 500 Frw.
