Reading, Writing and Comparing Whole Numbers Beyond 1,000,000
Lesson 5 of 6
35 min
Let's begin
A tea factory in Nyamasheke pays 1 245 306 Frw for electricity every month. The manager, Mutesi, wants to know what that costs over two years. Two years is 24 months. That is a big multiplication!
Multiplying by 10 moves every digit one place to the left, so we write one zero at the end. By 100, two zeros. By 1 000, three zeros.
Example: 45 600 × 1 000 = 45 600 000.
Split the 2-digit number into tens and ones, multiply by each part, then add the parts.
Worked example
1 245 306 × 24
Electricity for two years costs 29 887 344 Frw. Estimate to check: about 1 200 000 × 25 = 30 000 000. Our answer is close.
Worked example
A school buys 215 mattresses at 46 850 Frw each. What is the total cost?
Divide from the left. At each step: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down the next digit.
Worked example
7 452 000 Frw is shared equally among 36 community health workers. How much does each one get?
Worked example
A club shares 2 500 000 Frw equally among 12 players. 2 500 000 ÷ 12 = 208 333 remainder 4. Each player gets 208 333 Frw, and 4 Frw is left over. Check: 208 333 × 12 + 4 = 2 500 000. ✔
Tip
Split, multiply, add. Break the smaller number into hundreds, tens and ones, and multiply by each part. For division, remember the four steps: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down.
Work each one in your exercise book first, then tap Show answer to check.
2 306 450 × 30
Answer: 69 193 500. Multiply by 3, then by 10.
